The album "Porgy Bess" by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong is a classic masterpiece that showcases the legendary jazz artists at their finest. It just does not get any better than this! Louis Armstrong doing GERSHWIN! and arranged by the immortal Russell Garcia! One of the greatest recordings from one of the greatest jazz recordings of all time. Thank you for posting this!

I've enjoyed this overture from the first time I heard it when I was only 12 years old, and I'm coming up on 60 years of age this year, and I still enjoy it.

No offense to the composer but I think Russell Garcia's overture is better thought-out and conceived for what the material is than the actual opera overture by the composer. Gershwin's own overture for the opera sounds like the great songwriter was trying to step outside of himself to write European classical music for the purpose of trying to impress the classical establishment of his day (who looked down on Tin Pan Alley and popular Musical Comedy theater) and surrendered his unique voice in the process, whereas Garcia's adaptation here more successfully captures the heart of the material in a truly dramatic and uniquely American way the befits the story and the soul of the music. And no symphony orchestra could ever swing this thing in the sections where it does, like this does, for one simple reason. Most orchestral musicians (not to mention Conductors) are utterly ignorant of anything having to do with how to feel much less interpret or play any form of jazz to any degree whatsoever.
