Review by Naveed Taj Ghouri

The album, Music Written For Monterey 1965 Not Heard Played In Its Entirety At UCLA by Charles Mingus, is a masterpiece of jazz music. Mingus, a renowned jazz bassist, composer, and bandleader, created this album as a tribute to the Monterey Jazz Festival, which he had performed at in 1965. The album features some of Mingus's most innovative and complex compositions, played by a stellar ensemble of musicians.

The album opens with the brooding and intense "Dizzy Profile," which features Mingus's signature bass playing and a driving rhythm section. The album then moves into the hauntingly beautiful "Ysabel's Table Dance," which features a stunning saxophone solo by Charles McPherson. The album also includes the upbeat and swinging "Tijuana Gift Shop," which showcases Mingus's skill as a bandleader and arranger.

What sets this album apart is its historical significance. The album was recorded in 1965, but was not heard in its entirety until 2015, when the full performance was finally released. The album captures a moment in time when jazz was at its peak, and Mingus was at the forefront of the genre.
